H Gibeau Orange Julep Inc
About H Gibeau Orange Julep Inc
At least three generations of Montrealers and tourists have been flocking to the "big orange" for their fix of the frothy, mysterious orange cocktail that bears the same name as its home. The recipe is a well-guarded secret, as is the interior of the building, which, legend has it, used to be a brothel. The menu used to list only hot dogs, burgers, grilled cheeses and fries, but now boasts many more items, which unfortunately are probably harvested from the freezer. The summer months are ushered in by rollerblading waitresses cruising your food right to your car window, and Wednesday evenings are usually owned by vintage car collectors with greased hair and bobby-socks.

The ORANG JULEP is a symbol of Montreal, and most people who have moved away still come back for a JULEP. This is a delicious-tasting orange julep with very confidential recipe. The big ORANGE on Decarie can be seen for blocks away, and is open 12-months a year. You just have to drive up (or walk up) and be served in the car.

The food has gotten bland and the juice is now very expensive - still a thirst quencher an better than soda but for the price the food should be a little better.

You have to survive the bitter cold just to make it to the point where this restaurant opens its doors, usually sometime in April. On a nice hot day in Montreal (and it gets hot and humid), there could possibly be no cheaper thrill in this city than going to the JULEP for lunch. A must are the hot dogs (on toasted buns), the fires, and the Orange Julep, a drink recipe that has been kept secret for years. Whatever is in it, order a large one cause it will go fast. Please be advised that this is not a dieters place, nor a place your should go if you have any heart ailments.
By the way, if you have kids, they will LOVE eating here!
